Temperature Quilt: 2020 Complete with Border

I feel like it’s been so long since we’ve chatted about the Temperature Quilt from that yester-year 2020. Then I realized… has only been a month since I blogged about it, and that’s what I had been doing all along the way. I guess what I have really been missing is the tracking of temps. Doing something everyday for a year really changes a person, ya know?!?!?

Well, this week of 2021….in the middle of a polar vortex…..while I daydreamed of the dark blues that would have compromised a temperature quilt had I continued this project into the new year……I finished the white hexie border around the ‘ol 2020 girl.

So, Here she is….in all her Glory……

My 2020 Hexie Temperature Quilt representing Oshkosh, Wisconsin with the added White Hexie Border.

A Quick Reminder of the Temperature Legend for all you guys and gals that might be curious:

Just looking at it completed is so surreal to me.

I remember the end of every month catching up on missed days….being so nervous this would be the month I quit….

and then…..super excited to dive into the next month to see how much the color patterns would change through the month and from one to the next……

I have to be honest.

I’m pretty proud.

And…..because I wouldn’t be me without giving you a little glimpse into my crazy world, I give you this real-life anecdote:

I hang this quilt up on the wall in our living room in order to get these pictures. So, as we were sitting down to dinner last night, and all 4 children are talking around/over/on top of each other and us adult people…….

  • Me: I finished the white border around my quilt today.
  • Hubby: Yeah I see that! Looks really cool.
  • Child #1: The flower needs watering that’s why it’s dying.
  • Child #4: no, it needs more sun.
  • Hubby: it’s fine, we will just cut it off and throw it out so it will have more energy to bloom again…
  • Child #3: What?!?! Why Would you do that?????
  • Me: [explaining to #1-#4 the perils of carrying on 2 conversations at one time]
  • Hubby: Are you Kidding?!?!? Mom sewed that beautiful quilt every single day for a whole year. We wouldn’t just throw it out.
  • Me: **shrugs** seems kind of legit though.

And, that my friends, is how they keep me humble…..because after all that work, all that time, and all that beauty…..

Imagining one of them spilling something, ripping something, or tossing this aside as garbage wouldn’t surprise me at the end of the day.

And I guess that’s motherhood in a nutshell, no?

I do have more work to do on it:

The back of the quilt is what I will tackle next, but until then, I am going to sit back and enjoy it for a bit…..

And pray it doesn’t get thrown out 😉

Temperature Quilt: December 2020

We did it!

We made it through the whole year of 2020! Have you taken the adequate time to celebrate this accomplishment? I’m serious. Remember back to the days when we thought that year would never end???? Well, it did. And if you’re reading this, you are on the other side!

I loved writing these blog posts to look back and see each month in color. No matter what crazy thing was happening, this quilt made me happy.

Let’s take a look at that Temperature Legend again, shall we?

December finally brought with it more blues! I loved working with some different colors again! I don’t think I’ve ever prayed for colder weather in my life…..but I did in December 2020, and it was solely for the purpose of this quilt.

After I finished the color hexies for the month….and before I took these pics…..I was so excited to get this project completed that I really started trying to knock out the white border hexies. It’s so pretty seeing it all come together!

THIS IS IT! ALL THE HIGHS and LOWS (temperature wise) of 2020 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Now this is the point that I would normally do a recap and show the “Watch Me Grow” progession through each month……but I’m not gonna do that this time.

Well, I have lots still to do. I have to finish the border, decide what I want for the backing, quilt and bind.

Now, who thinks this will all actually get completed by the end of 2021????

Temperature Quilt: November 2020

ahhh….November….you’ve come and gone in a flash! I wasn’t the only one that felt that way, right? After all the months of 2020 that seemed to draaaagggggg oooooonnnnnn…..November clipped along quick for me.

One more month left of 2020. One more month left of this temperature quilt project.

Let’s recap, shall we? The Temperature Legend I created back in January gives us our colors…

I chose to sew 2 hexies per day….one for the high temp and one for the low.

Weather wise, Oshkosh, Wisconsin was beautiful the Month of November

I was very happy to dip back into the greens….and I was quite surprised that we didn’t see a single shade of blue yet…

The Quilt to Date: January 2020- November 2020 in Hexie Color

I do just love to stare at it….

We’ve come so far….just one more month to go……

Since this last picture was taken…I’ve actually been working on the white hexie border…I know I won’t be finished when the end of 2020 gets here….since I need a border & a backing….AND to quilt…..but I’m still pretty impressed that I stuck with it!

hhhmmmmm…..wondering if I should take on a 2021 project like this? Any suggestions?

Temperature Quilt: October 2020

Here we are.

I actually had this ready to post for a couple days now, but I thought I would use this beautiful array of color to brighten your internet eyes today. If you haven’t been off the grid for the past…well, 4 years, you know that here in the United States of America we had a Presidential Election yesterday.

I don’t speak about politics on social media.

There is a reason for that.

It’s not because I don’t care. It’s not because I don’t have an opinion.

It’s because what matters the most to me in this life is not the RED or the BLUE. Politics somehow makes so many people see only those 2 colors around election season.

Those people that don’t vote the same way you do….guess what?

They are your friends.

They are your family.

They are the moms and dads that commiserate over the day-to-day hardships of parenting with you….and also love your children as their own.

They are the healthcare workers caring for you and for your loved ones.

They are the teachers you so desperately respect for their patience and effort to educate your children.

They are the people that you sit next to in church.

They are the kind strangers you pass everyday.

They are the ones that surrounded you when your loved ones died with cards…..and food…….and hugs.

This world is full of all the colors.

This land that we are gifted to be on such a short amount of time…’s filled with REDs and BLUEs, yes….but also, Oranges, Yellows, Greens, and Purples. Some days we identify with one color, other days another.

That’s what I’m thinking about today, anyway. I just thought I shared that with you.

So, if you don’t mind….I’d like to show you the pretty Hexie Temperature Quilt I’ve now completed 10 months of.

2 hexies for each day….one for the high temp and one for the low. All Temperature readings are from Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Here’s the Legend to refresh you memory, if you need it:

And this is what January 2020- October 2020 looks like in Temperature Hexie Form:

It’s beginning to noticeably cool off in Wisconsin….so you’ll see the greens are making a comeback.

October’s row has been super fun and interesting for me since it’s run the gamut of mid 20’s to above 70…so that means LOTS of color variation!

So, if my little speech up top didn’t help to put you in a kinder, safter, loving space…..I HIGHLY recommend turning on a Hallmark Christmas Movie 🙂 That’s what I’ve been quilting to this month!

(You can see my movie reviews here if you haven’t already)

And now here’s something that you’ll all enjoy!…..the WATCH ME GROW portion of this post.

On to November!

May it be filled with all the reminders of your blessings, and may you take the time to be truly grateful for them ❤️

Temperature Quilt: September 2020

Oh, September! How I love you so.

My favorite month of the year has come and gone…. and the temperature quilt is growing and changing again.

It is kind of amazing to look at this past month in color because it really did feel like a FALL month as far as weather….yet colorwise…looked very similar to the rest of summer. Strange.

Let’s take a look at that Temp Legend again, shall we?

I know I go over it every month, but for those who don’t know it already….I’m recording the temperatures of Oshkosh, Wisconsin in the year 2020. Each day gets 2 hexies: one for the high temp and one for the low. Kinda gives a little but more beauty to this crazy year, no?

We saw only one day in September dip below 41o F here in Oshkosh, WI. as indicated by the lone yellow green hexie.

I’ve also been a bit more relaxed about looking behind at what fabrics I’ve used on which days….so there are multiple places where the same fabrics are touching…..and, if you are wondering, yes it bothers me.

Yes, I will stare at these spots for years to come it will drive me crazy.

Will it drive me crazy enough to take it apart and redo it? Absolutely not.

My laziness are outshines my OCD.

Here she is in all her January-September 2020 glory:

From the beginning of the year until now….it’s been so fun to see this project grow and change:

Just like the change of seasons that I LOVE so much….I am excited to see the cooler temperatures bring the cooler colors back to this quilt!

October has already been an awesome shift! Can’t wait to show you next month!
